I was wandering today around the LES and Chinatown. I had lunch at Buddha Bodhai, a very practical and yummy vegetarian restaurant down at the end of Mott Street. I was looking for “Apt. for Rent” signs. I’m out of my Bed-Stuy place in two months and it’s time to start looking for my next home. As I slowly made my way up to Houston to catch the F train home, I stumbled upon an outdoor installation by HBO at the corner of Ludlow and Broome. The street-level version of their Voyeur Project, it was a silent film projected on the side of a building. The film gave the appearance of the exterior wall having been removed, thereby allowing us to observe the private goings-on of the building’s inhabitants.
I have to admit that, at first, it looked pretty cool. SPOILERS: There’s macabre humor, marital strife, the death of a loved one (with an angel soaring toward Heaven even!), strip poker, a birth on a pool table…but once I’d seen the film twice, I was left wanting something meaningful, something other than one more examination of filmgoer-as-voyeur. Snooze.
Here are a couple of cellphone snaps I’ve posted on Flickr, followed by a link to the HBO site.
