As I wandered the streets yesterday, I came upon a New York Blood Center blood drive at Union Square. They had the donation bus there, what I like to call the Bloodmobile, and it had been a few months since I’d given, so I signed up. The staff was friendly enough, although not very attentive; once they’d hooked up the tubes, they missed that my bag had already reached capacity.
I pump pretty strongly and I’m always in and out quickly when I give blood. There was something wrong with the mechanical scale that “tells” them the bag’s full. When someone finally came back to my bed, he was quite agitated that my bag was bulging. I think they got a good pint and a half out of me.
They also let me just stroll right out of there without monitoring me–not that I mind, because I like the adventure of staggering around NYC short of blood. I went and shot pool for an hour at the old Corner Billiards (I didn’t catch the new name) and then headed back out into the sunshine.
I realize this might not be the best testimonial for giving blood, but trust me, this was not a typical experience. Please, give blood…just not too much.
