This plaque hangs on the south wall of the grounds of the New York Public Library on W. 40th Street. Wendell Wilkie ran against FDR in 1940 and lost his bid for the presidency as an opponent of the New Deal. The quote on the plaque is merely quaint these days:
“I believe in America because in it we are free–free to choose our government, to speak our minds, to observe our different religions.”
